About the video

This is a live stream consisting of a presentation and a question-and-answer session, held on Instagram and YouTube as part of an event organised by students of Istanbul Aydın University. The talk begins with the history of artificial intelligence (AI) and describes the Turing test, the periods in which research stalled, self-learning software, and task-specific applications such as facial recognition and navigation. It then addresses the views on whether artificial general intelligence is possible, where such entities are to be placed within the law’s distinction between persons and things, and the questions of granting them fundamental rights and personality. From the standpoint of criminal law, it considers will, participation in crime and the purpose of sanctions; using the examples of autopilot and driverless vehicles, it discusses who is to bear liability. The question-and-answer session covers the use of AI in the judiciary and in legal practice, Asimov’s laws of robotics, the sanctions that could be applied to robots, accidents involving autonomous vehicles, and advice on foreign languages for law students.
