About the video

This is an introductory online lecture for law students, given as part of İstanbul Akademi and delivered on Instagram and YouTube because of the pandemic. The lecture first describes the emergence of data protection law, Convention No. 108 of the Council of Europe, Directive 95/46 of the European Union and the regulation adopted later, and the process by which Law No. 6698 on the Protection of Personal Data (KVKK) was adopted in Türkiye. After comparing the approaches of China, the United States and the European Union, it explains the concepts of personal data, special categories of personal data, data subject and data controller. On the basis of the rules in force on the date of the recording, it covers the conditions for data processing, explicit consent, the basic principles of processing, the destruction of data, the right to be forgotten, and the transfer of personal data abroad and within the country. The final part touches on administrative fines and the relevant offences in the Turkish Criminal Code (TCK), after which the students’ questions are answered.
