About the video

This is the January 2021 recording of a live-stream conversation for students, hosted by a law faculty student. The first part explains the policy change WhatsApp announced at the time, in terms of the advertising-based revenue model of free services, end-to-end encryption, the sharing of metadata and a comparison with other messaging applications. The second part deals with the requirement to switch on cameras and microphones in online exams during the pandemic; the questions of the transfer of personal data abroad, the obligation to inform, explicit consent and whether a student who does not consent may be admitted to the exam are discussed under Law No. 6698 on the Protection of Personal Data (KVKK) as it stood at the time of recording. The purpose of exams and the problem of cheating are assessed from the viewpoint of a member of academic staff. In response to viewers’ questions, the discussion covers the keeping of access logs on the university network, the position of students who have no device, the inquiries opened into WhatsApp by public authorities, the retention of exam recordings and the quality of distance education.
