About the video

This episode of the programme One on One (Teke Tek), broadcast on Habertürk TV, discussed the new contractual terms that WhatsApp asked its users to accept and the use of personal data. The guests were the technology writer Serdar Kuzuloğlu and Prof. Dr. Murat Volkan Dülger. The first part described Facebook’s advertising-based business model, the founding of WhatsApp and its acquisition by Facebook. The topics addressed by Dülger included the historical development of personal data protection law, the Council of Europe convention in this field, Directive 95/46/EC, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Law No. 6698 on the Protection of Personal Data (KVKK), the difference between the approaches of the European Union and the United States of America to data processing, and the application of the new terms in countries outside Europe. The discussion then turned to end-to-end encryption, profiling on the basis of metadata, the debate on access to encrypted devices, cookies and the right to be forgotten. The programme closed with the data-based revenue model of digital services offered free of charge and the future of privacy.
