About the video

This is the recording of the first lecture of the four-week online certificate programme “Human Rights in the Digital Age” (Dijital Çağda İnsan Hakları); after a talk of about forty-five minutes, participants’ questions relayed by the moderator are answered. The lecture first addresses the digitalisation of everyday life and the right of access to the internet, and then the privacy of private life, the protection of personal data, freedom of expression on the internet, the right not to be stigmatised and the right to be forgotten, together with their bases in the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the Constitution. It considers the processing of personal data by public bodies and law enforcement, fake videos produced by imitating faces and voices, revenge porn, the influence of social media reactions on pre-trial detention decisions, the surveillance society and the problem of jurisdiction in cybercrimes. The question-and-answer part covers the criterion for posts that incite hatred and hostility among the public, the DNA bank, the code system used as part of the pandemic measures, the closure of accounts by social media companies, hate speech, the social media legislation under discussion at the time of recording, and the constitutional status of the right to be forgotten. Recommendations on sources and master’s programmes are also given for students who wish to work in the field of IT law.
