Abstract

The struggle to possess the means of production has been the cause of all conflicts of interest and wars on earth and of the socio-economic structure that has come down to the present day. Particularly when one starts from the fact that the base determines the superstructure to a significant extent, the effects of this struggle appear before us in all their starkness. An important factor which goes hand in hand with this struggle and must not be forgotten is the concept of “freedom of thought” and “the obstacles placed in the way of freedom of thought”. When one recalls how many people lost their lives for the sake of their ideas in the emergence of today’s civilisation and culture, the meaning of “freedom of thought” and the relentless struggles waged for it can be better understood.
