Terrorism has existed since very early periods of history, and its intensity and harmful effects have steadily increased, particularly since the 1960s. Owing to the rise in international terrorist acts from 1968 onwards, it has become one of the social, political and legal concepts most discussed in the 20th century and in the present 21st century. Terror, which derives from the Latin word “terrere”, meaning to tremble or shudder, is used in many senses but is generally used in the sense of political terror. Political terror, in turn, may be defined in general as violent acts aimed at overthrowing the regime in a country or placing it in difficulty.
