About the video
Prof. Dr. Murat Volkan Dülger was the first guest of “Go On, Ask” (Sor Bakalım?), an event organised by the Law Club of Istanbul Aydın University, and answered questions that students had written anonymously and that were drawn from a glass bowl. After a short account of his career, the conversation turned to the recruitment of trainees at his law office, his working routine and his use of time; the role of defence counsel, the decision to take on a defence and the point that, in cases involving an alleged criminal organisation, counsel is bound by the contents of the case file were also addressed. The preparation of examination questions, the marking of papers and the review of objections to marks by a committee were explained, and the skills required for an academic career and for practice as a lawyer were compared. Dülger recounted memories of his first hearings and of the teachers under whom he trained, recommended to law students Stefan Zweig’s The Right to Heresy: Castellio against Calvin (Vicdan Zorbalığa Karşı) and the memoirs of Ernst E. Hirsch, and spoke of the textbooks on the general part of criminal law that he relied on at the time the Turkish Criminal Code (TCK) changed. The later part of the conversation dealt with private gun ownership, the qualities looked for in job applications, honesty in the profession, the grounds for withdrawing from a mandate and professional ethics in dealings with judges and prosecutors; questions on politics and private life were also answered.
